Speeding time-to-market for new products

Business Case
A global health-care company was looking to rapidly develop a new medical device to distribute into India and other global markets. The company sought to reduce its time-to-market as well as improve profitability. While the company has vast global operations, it did not have a local presence in India to effectively identify potential partners capable of supporting the design and production of the new device.

Reese Partners Role
Because of the alliances that Reese Partners has developed in India, we were engaged to identify three potential business partners that could meet key requirements:
» Rapid Design Capability - suppliers would need to work with the client's R&D group to rapidly design a product that included technical embedded software drivers;
» Mechanical Engineering Proficiency - because of safety issues, any partner would need to have familiarity with an international commission's safety system; and
» Strong Medical Device Manufacturing & Quality Experience - prospective partners had to be an established medical device manufacturer in India with experience in material quarantine procedures, component and device traceability, labeling controls and process reliability. The ability to diagnose and repair any device problems was essential;
» Efficient Project Management - the partner would need to closely work with U.S. based R&D and engineering groups in a timely and responsive manner.

Client Success
Based on exacting requirements and restrictions, Reese Partners screened prospective suppliers for the client by:
» Identifying and contacting over 100 Indian medical device manufacturers, software and engineering companies;
» Visiting 20 viable candidates and performed a detailed on-site audit of their capabilities; and
» Scoring and evaluating each supplier utilizing criteria specific to the client's requirements;

Results
Within weeks, Reese Partners delivered a full report to the client recommending three prospective partners. The client is currently engaged in partnership discussions with two of the recommended suppliers.
